I think Bennington is widely know because of its historical significance especially relating to its place of importance in the Revolutionary War. There are quite a few reminders of its history throughout the town, the most famous of which is surely the Bennington Monument.

Decades ago a thriving middle class was supported by good paying manufacturing jobs. Since the demise of these factories Bennington has struggled to get back on its feet. There is not only much to see in Bennington there is much to hope for.

Frankly I have always thought of Shaftsbury mostly as a town you drive through on the way to Bennington if you’re going the old way down the old Route 7. However, you should definitely plan to stop at the Chocolate Barn and right across the street there is Clearbrook farm for flowers, fruits and vegetables. Shaftsbury is also the home of the Robert Frost Museum.

Arlington is a charming town on the old Route 7 south of Manchester. Once the home of Norman Rockwell it provides a close knit community in an atmosphere more like small town Vermont and less like the hustle and bustle of its northern neighbor. And a river runs through it; perhaps the most iconic and fabled river in Vermont; The Battenkill. And on your way out of town heading south, stop for a creemee at the Arlington Dairy Bar. If you’re headed west out of town on Route 313 be sure to pay a visit to Nancy and the crew at the Wayside Country Store.
