Lyme weeks 136It was an overcast, hot and humid day when we left our visit to Wells. We took the right fork and thus found our way to Middletown Springs. Lots of places we visit look like crossroads for folks journeying toward all points of the compass and Middletown Springs has all the earmarks of such a junction. Like most of the towns we visit there is a small town center consisting of a country store, town green with probably a war memorial of some kind, and a church. Here, there is the Middletown Community Church in a building dating back to the 1700’s, about which you can learn more on their website.

We remembered that Sissy Hicks, longtime chef at the Dorset Inn, had opened an establishment near the town green called Sissy’s Kitchen, and a charming place it was. Ever heard of fine dining takeout (here called “takeaway”)? Neither had we but that’s what’s on the menu. Breakfast and lunch are served as well. There are a number of rustic tables on the porch and on the peaceful green grounds where you could take your victuals and enjoy them in the fresh air. There’s a Barn Shop full of antiques, and beautifully landscaped garden areas where flowers grow alongside a bounty of herbs and vegetables no doubt destined for the kitchen.

Chester Wells-007In the center of town we saw a few examples of restored homes dating back to the 18th century. Just outside town, we also saw the biggest falling-down barn we have ever seen. Like most towns we visit the homes and neighborhoods are dotted with everything from neglected properties to beautiful manicured farms. We certainly plan to return soon if for no other reason than to sample Sissy’s cooking.
